Anti-Choice: The Misnomer that is Pro-Life
by Elaine Gilmartin
I don’t know about you, but I’m really tired of presenting logical arguments combined with statistical research indicating the social and emotional damage done to women when they do not have reproductive freedom to the so-called pro-lifers. It’s about as effective as reciting an exhaustive list of the former president’s deficits as a leader and a human being. Crickets. But maybe they can recognize themselves here. Maybe.
Admonitions Against Birth Control
Other than “Be fruitful and multiply,” nothing in scripture prohibits contraception. Over the centuries, some church leaders recognized legitimate reason for limiting family size and birth control was used prodigiously by many a Christian. The Pontifical Commission on Birth Control in the 1960’s overwhelmingly supported the idea for the church to expand its thinking on artificial birth control.
But why allow a more enlightened majority to prevail when a few men in power can assert their authority over a woman’s ability to control her own body?
It would seem then that if Christians are so invested in adhering to the natural order when it comes to reproduction and refusing to budge on that premise, maybe we can challenge this stance.
