As an agnostic and mental health therapist, I feel very strongly that what organized religion asserts to know through divine revelation is impossible to know. A perfect being cannot exist in time and space, is not corporeal or temporal, cannot have a past or future so assigning intent, motives or actions is arrogant and disingenuous. That being said, I never challenge a client’s belief system but I will challenge them to live a life with autonomy and self-efficacy. Prayer can be a passive endeavor and persistent fears of being judged can and often does exacerbate anxiety and otherizes people of different faiths We can live lives of empathy and compassion and connection without the enticement of an eternal reward
