Empathy is the ability to have compassion for others even when you do not understand their frame of reference. There is a difference, however, in that white hetero men are considered the default underpinning for societal and cultural experiences. We take it for granted they are leaders, presidents, etc. I write this because other groups become 'otherized' meaning they are representative of their 'group.' If a white man hits your car, he's careless; if it's a woman driver who hits you, it's because women are not good drivers. This translates to women being shown less empathy often times by both men and women, and is evidenced by significant disparities of online vitriol, see The Chaos Machine, by Max Fisher. I share this because I agree with your assertion we should all have greater empathy for all groups, but the reality is we still tend to see white men as individuals and thus more deserving of empathy, than other groups who become representative of perceived stereotypes.
