I agree on all points. American culture is based on rugged individualism, competition, and “pull yourselves up by your bootstraps” mentality that is akin to social Darwinism. I’ll add to all your wonderful suggestions to be mindful that tension is carried in the central nervous system and without regular catharsis, you are more prone to anxiety and panic attacks. Don’t just avoid negative stimuli, increase positive ones. Exercise is essential-we must be much more physically active to discharge cortisol and physical contact is essential. Bear hugs from someone you trust relaxes the longest nerve in the body and promotes the rise of oxytocin. Nature and other soothing sensory stimuli, visual and olfactory, are powerful. And be kind yourself- it’s amazing how many people, certainly not all, tend to respond in kind when eye contact and a smile are shared.
