I am a social worker by profession which entails ample education in cultural competence and respect for individual’s traditions and customs. But as a therapist it is my responsibility to challenge people’s frameworks in pursuit of mental health. I work with many women from various countries, China, Korea, Iran, India. We talk about expectations placed on them to be caregivers, to be thin to get a husband, to suppress their dreams for others. You can be respectful and not attack while helping them to think more critically about these messages within the context of culture and how that runs counter not only to individual mental health, but also collective societal well-being. Start by listening, have a dialogue, and facilitate deeper reflection on gender constructs. It does benefit us all.
