Important piece. This highlights the need to deconstruct gender roles. Not healthy for anyone. As a therapist who works with young men to ones embarking on retirement and specialize in suicide prevention, life satisfaction is not found in external validation, whether that’s a six figure income or sports car or brood of kids. Competition in those areas breeds anxiety. It also creates an adversarial-dominance mentality that harms interpersonal relationships. The core of emotional health is always connection to others. Evolution over hundreds of thousands of years primed us for this. Research shows the healthiest emotional state resides somewhere in the middle of masculinity/femininity. Neither extreme is healthy. So maybe we stop pigeon holing people into roles and challenge the systems, predatory capitalism for instance, that fuels and preys on insecurities for profit. Also more research has to be done on suicide. A recent study in Nature showed the tendency toward suicide is inherited with gene expression specifically geared toward the method of suicide, ie more violent means. We need to build emotional health in kids to process tough emotions and to forge friendships, boys and girls, so we don’t breed loneliness. One more aside, the digital world is actually much more anti- female based on research cited in the Chaos Machine by Max Fisher. Thought-provoking piece!
