It is very unfortunate that childbearing and childrearing are pitted against women's full self-actualization and certainly do not have to be. Not just tax incentives, but also treating Head Start (which will now be history) and day care as we do public education, also free prenatal health care, doula services, no 'mother tax' as corporate culture penalizes women who step away or need accommodations, etc. Then of course unpaid domestic labor and care for elders falling heavily on women leads to burn out. We need a culture shift with men equally invested in the domestic sphere and more female representation in politics to address their specific concerns. Sadly, many women would love to have two kids, even a third, but too many of them feel alone and unsupported in this endeavor. Now with punitive legislation in the 17+states in the US, young women are seeking sterilization so that their bodies cannot be weaponized against them. We need radical change to address birth rates. And sadly, we have already missed out on countless Einsteins and Mozarts with women throughout history and in countries like Afghanistan, denying them education or limiting it to adolescence so they can be married off.
